Female Creative Entrepreneur: Embracing Your Flow

Let's delve into two crucial aspects.

1. The Period Taboo:

For years, periods and professionalism seemed unable to coexist. I remember vividly the shame of asking a friend to pass me a tampon at school or attempting to take a day off from my serving jobs due to severe cramps.

But, there's a movement afoot.

2. Period Taboo Talk in the Workplace:

Many workplaces are now open to discussions about menstruation, breaking the taboo that once surrounded the topic. Companies are implementing policies to provide menstrual products in restrooms, offering flexible work hours for employees experiencing menstrual-related symptoms, and encouraging open dialogue about menstruation to foster a more supportive and inclusive environment.

Paid Sick Days:

Some countries and regions have recognized the importance of providing paid sick leave specifically for menstruation-related issues. For example, countries like Japan have introduced "menstrual leave" policies that allow women to take time off work without penalty when experiencing severe menstrual symptoms. Similarly, some states in India have mandated menstrual leave for female employees.

So, what does all of this mean for a creative freelancer like me?

Ever since I was 16, I had been on the pill, which caused a complete disconnect from my body and its natural rhythms. Since 2018, I've been off and on the pill, finally dropping it completely in 2022.

Here's what I've learned about myself and my natural cycle since then:

Biologically in the Luteal Phase, though technically not the first phase - it's my "doom" phase:

Following ovulation, progesterone levels rise alongside estrogen, peaking during the middle of the luteal phase. Progesterone has a calming effect and may induce feelings of relaxation. However, some women may experience fluctuations in energy levels during this phase, with potential mood changes and fatigue as hormone levels decline towards the end of the cycle.

In this phase, my PMS (pre-menstrual symptoms) runs wild. I used to get a ton of acne, and overall my mood is meh. It was time for me to integrate this as a fact. It’s not just a "leave it at home" and go to work situation. Women can literally squat less weight than usual during this time of their cycle - so no, I will not force myself to operate at full capacity during these days.

My Creative Cycle: Less brain-involved tasks; usually finishing up projects, mobile versions, and final SEO implementation. I am not strategizing or creating bountiful designs.

Biologically in the first phase, the Menstrual Phase, what I like to call my sweet saving grace:

At the start of the menstrual phase, estrogen and progesterone levels are low. As menstruation begins, energy levels may be lower due to hormonal changes and blood loss. However, as the phase progresses, estrogen begins to rise, potentially leading to increased energy.

Yes, the first two days are tough, but then you get it all back. You remember that you are the fu**ing shit, and all those self-criticizing thoughts vanish.

This is the phase in which I like to strategize. I summon energy, write emails, plan meetings, and write quotes for upcoming projects.

Biologically in the second phase, the Follicular Phase, what I like to call the "up, up towards up" phase:

Estrogen levels gradually rise during the follicular phase, peaking just before ovulation. This increase in estrogen can lead to higher energy levels, improved mood, and heightened physical endurance. As a result, many women may feel more energetic and motivated during this phase.

You guessed it. I dive into meetings - back-to-back. I make sales, close deals, kick-start projects, and work on my goals in business & life.

The Ovulation Phase; oh, honey, the rush of creative goodness:

Around ovulation, estrogen levels surge, reaching their highest point in the menstrual cycle. Additionally, luteinizing hormone (LH) spikes, triggering ovulation. Some women may experience a surge in energy and heightened libido during this phase, potentially due to increased estrogen levels.

Absolute creative bliss; this is when I design your first draft, strategize creative content, and create most of my creative pieces.

What phase am I in right now? Shortly after the menstrual and beginning of the follicular. I am in my feels and I am close to who I am and my body. I underwent a wave of self-doubt and am coming out on the other side of it. This piece of content speaks to that.

Anywho, ladies, harness the POWER OF YOUR CYCLE. Gentlemen, grow up, educate yourself, and be a better husband, boyfriend, brother, friend, manager, co-worker - you get the gist.
